THE 43

Periodic table of
the facial musculature
Trainable on camera
Anatomical plate of the muscles of facial expression

Forty-three muscles in your face.
Thirteen a camera can see.

Or train one muscle  ↓

The chart is the map. Red tiles carry an exercise, outlined ones are muscles you must not recruit, and the rest a camera cannot see contract. Pick from the list below.

How to read the table

Solid tiles carry an exercise. Dashed tiles are suppression targets — muscles the app watches to be sure they are not firing, because a face that cheats recruits its neighbours. Dimmed tiles are real muscles a camera cannot see contract: the pterygoids behind the jaw, the hyoid straps under the chin, the vestigial ones that move your ears.

About the number 43

It is folklore. It comes from the old line about frowning taking 43 muscles, which has no anatomical source. Real counts run from about 20 to about 60 depending on what you include. This roster commits to 43 and shows its working — every counting decision is on the tile.

The 43 reads your face entirely inside this browser. No video is uploaded, recorded, or sent anywhere — there is no server to send it to. Grant camera access to begin.

Step 01 — Baseline

Hold a neutral face

Look straight at the camera and relax everything: brow, jaw, lips. We are recording your face at rest, so that every measurement afterwards is a change from you — not from an average of other people's faces.
